brick was engaged by amcal to design an affordable senior housing project in san ramon, ca. typical of many affordable projects, this particular project required the navigation of a number of different funding sources including the city, county, rda, and private equity. we had to create a design that solved the functional requirements of the site, but also addressed the many regulatory constraints indicative of the project's multiple-funding sources. contextually, brick had to accommodate a gracious sense of arrival from alcosta ave - a very busy street. by providing a porte cochere off of alcosta instead of addressing alcosta directly, we created a more defined and quiet front door. additionally, by pulling the entry inboard from alcosta, the entry could also directly address views and access to the main project open space through the project's "living room". the open space itself benefits from the building's orientation by maximizing solar orientation, addressing the courtyard facing units, and buffering the building from the edge of the surface parking. sited in a traditional residential neighborhood, the project utilizes a sympathetic blend of stucco, wood siding, brick veneer, and pitched roof forms to create a contextual relationship to the surrounding environment, but in doing so uses a contemporary sensibility.
