the samyama yoga center is a place of healing. it is a holistic experience utilizing yoga as the vehicle to nourish the body and mind. the center is a place where students and teachers alike can come together in practice and contemplation to exchange ideas, techniques and share their thoughts on the practice of yoga. the center is equipped with state-of-the-art studios for classes of all sizes and styles. supplementing the instructional spaces are spa quality restrooms, massage treatment, retail lounge and outdoor spaces to linger and socialize.
designed in the 1980s, this 27,000 sf facility had not aged well and had grown in a manner not anticipated in the original design; many program areas that drive membership became trapped in parts of the building that were cramped and dark. wonderful canyon views were cut off from much of the facility and the arrival sequence was confusing and uninviting. a palette of dated colors and materials contributed made the facility dated and showed its age in all the wrong ways. we helped the ymca determine the most profitable activities and those that had untapped potential.
the cim group, which owns the oakland marriott, needed some guidance on how to reconsider the interface of the hotel and the oakland convention center located on the property. cost-effective strategies that utilized existing building systems but updated the appearance of the existing convention center and pre-function lobby were proposed, utilizing sustainable lighting strategies and materials. in its current state, the lobby lacked a true sense of identity from without, and also a means to sponsor informal, spur-of-the-moment conversations during convention activities.
